Quick Summary: Watching "Robot & Frank" and various YouTube videos helped me understand current robot capabilities and the feasibility of the Newton AI Robot. I found it highly feasible and was amazed by the results! As humans, we already form emotional connections with everyday appliances, so adding a robot will likely spark our curiosity and desire for companionship with these assistants. Although robots already perform mundane tasks and assist in daily life, the concept of a robot assistant still feels intangible. Therefore, I had to rely on my imagination, input from research participants, and existing information. "Robot & Frank" is a touching film about a retired burglar with dementia who gradually forms an emotional bond with the assistant robot his son gives him. Beyond "Robot & Frank," I explored further and discovered a wealth of information on YouTube about current robot capabilities. A summary from a recent robot exhibition in Japan provided an exciting glimpse into the future of robotics. I learned a lot from observing Frank's interactions with the robot and its potential to improve daily life for everyone, not just seniors. Director Jake Schreier and writer Christopher Ford show us how robots can become integral companions, shifting away from their typical portrayal as destructive forces.

Competitive Benchmarking

For my Competitive Benchmark, I had to get creative since I don't own a robot or have comparable apps. I used screenshots from the iRobot App and AI apps like Genie AI, and I tested the Phillips Hue app for additional insights and inspiration.

User Interview & Personae

I conducted user interviews with a diverse group to understand their daily routines and the likelihood of owning a robot AI assistant. From their needs, I identified how a robot could meet those needs.

Customer Journey

Affinity Diagram

The Customer Journey helped me visualize the process users follow to complete tasks with Newton, the AI Robot Assistant, based on prior research. By stepping into their shoes, I understood how important the ease of use and integrating the robot into the users' daily routine and how privacy and repair costs play a major role.

A flow chart illustrates a process, system, or algorithm.  This flow chart shows the screens and actions users need to successfully onboard the app and complete their first task with the robot.

Mid-Fi Prototype

Medium Fidelity Prototype for me is a way to add interactivity to the flat Design and basically mimic how the website will act.
It's a way to remove any design elements and just focus on the User Experience and the User Flow through the robot operation app.
